my bad i read it for the 21st time and now i understand it is the way they wrote Valve timing advanced and retarded valve timing confused me and i interpreted it wrongly (even after that many reads).
although in my defence i did read it thoughroly and they DO say to adjust the timing by adjusting the pin left or right and say nothing about pulling off or putting on the chain. cheers witzl

now to work out cold idling.
