i've been a guitar player for the last 5 years and i have a fair knowledge as to what's good in brands and what might suit your style.
firstly, how much money do you want to spend on equipment? basses can range from $400 onwards. I'd probably recommend something like a 5 string ibanez or maybe a yamaha. they're jap branded, but the give a phat sound when it comes to heavy metal playing.
amps, i'd go all out and get mesa boogie. marshall's are good and all but they fuzz a bit and don't sound good when metal is played through them. expect 3k+ for amps.
I could ramble on for ages and ages but what i'd recommend what finney said, jump on some forums, read some reviews, go into your local music store and try out some gear, weigh up what you want in quality and how much you wanna spend and you should be right
