12.8V is not good, you need better cables
if the light has started to be faintly on, it could also be a field diode failing.. i've had the solder shake apart on many an alternator.. the voltage will go down to maybe 12.5 or even 11.8..
BUT
with one of those 10 LED battery voltage monitor kits from jaycar, you can see the LED's flashing up and down... if it is just the brushes, then the voltage is low and stays low.. with field diodes, it jumps around.
the LEd meter is one fo the most useful alternator test devices ive ever used.. and it's only about $15
