Techie, Did the Thermostat fix your overcooling problem?

My friend has a simular problem, He's temp guage goes to the far left cold side when he's driving. His car seems to go into cold mode idle when stationary after driving. (high idle to warm up)

I had a quick look, and i don't think the engine is actually running cold in my friends case. His thrermo fans still switch on and off like usual, the heaters work, the engine is hot as is the radiator and hoses etc. So i'm thinking fualty temp sensor for the guage, fualty coolant temp sensor to the ECU? Never really had this problem before, its always been the otherway around, overheating.

Anyway from what i've described what other things could cuase this?
