In Qld, a 3 litre turbo is out, a 4 litre turbo is definitely out, but a 2.5 litre turbo (1JZ-GTE) is ok - there are a few of these running around in SE Qld.
One of the major attractions of the RA23 is its light, well-balanced chassis. Put a big cast-iron inline six in front and it becomes a lead-tipped arrow, in which case you might as well put a big engine in a Torana like all the other bogans.
My vote is for a 3S-GTE or NA 1UZ-FE, both of which have more power than you can safely use on the street and are no longer or heavier than the original engine.
