dont worry to much if timin isnt changing much
if the ecu spits out the codes then the ecu is understanding
to go into diag mode
another thing which can affect timing is the adjustment of the throttle sensor
i once had probs with a 100kw in an ae86
because the throttle wasnt set correctly
the timing would not retard when in limp mode
this mean the timing was way to advanced
took ages to find out
