Looking at the circuit diagram, the igniter has the ability to power either side of the primary coil independantly. I assume it does this to fire another spark shortly after the first, probably in an attempt to ignite unburnt vapour and improve emissions.
As part of this process the igniter send two signals back to the ecu to tell it the coil has fired correctly. Unfortunately you are going to run into problems fitting an aftermarket coil or ignition unit as the factory ecu still needs to get these signals or injection will stop.

Hmm, just what I needed to hear, but not what I wanted to hear. So both a coil or something like an MSD 6AL or a MSD 6BTM will not work? I'm wondering if both of the 2 coil fire wires from the oem coil can be wired into the 1 side of the aftermarket coil? I'm not sure about the logistics of this, but I wonder if that would at least get signal to the ecu.
