Steam pipe turbo manifolds dont require braces to stop them from cracking but stainless steel does. However wouldnt hurt to have one.

the brace stops the weight of the turbo, dump pipe, manifold pulling the manifold off the engine - it's not just to re-enforce the welds in the piping.
i'd say it's very important - even stock cast manifolds have braces (well, my 1G does)

Its not essential with steam pipe toyota does tend to over engineer their cars.
I would imagine the brace is there to stop the exhaust manifold from sagging when it gets red hot which causes blown headgaskets and so on. However steam pipe has quite a high thermal capablility.

It is required if you are using a factory computer with a knock sensor. If you remove the braces even from a factory manifold like on the 3S-GTE for example, the engine will appear to be knocking.
