A much trickier question than it first seems.
Differentiate between handling and grip.
Grip is physically how much friction the tyres can develop.
Handling on the other hand is a much vaguer area. It includes grip but also encompases the feeling, feedback, behavior, efficeiency and transient response of a vehicle.
They ideally work together...
Wider tyres will have more grip but the real art is to modify the suspension so it makes the absolute best use of the cars tyres in terms of contact patch. Then add some wide soft, sticky tyres and you'll be in AE86 heaven.
