sweet, i'd luv to check out his minitruck then, as you say there's no one around who has done it before, so it's hard to get info on it in Australia. Airbags can "handle" better to a degree, for a large chevy .. i wouldn't say so cuz the body roll on bags even with individual electronic valves is still there.
Hydros is just ruff if not setup right, mine however is almost no difference in ride quality as my celica is very light and nimble. I've seen the price for airbags and they're ok, but $7000 ??? that's more than what my car is worth! I'd prefer to buy the hydraulics and install them myself. Again yes hydraulics will be faster and hop higher, but air is more reliable comfortable. My kit was a competition kit $1360 US with hopping coils and pivot balls (for IRS). I got a hella cheap hook up on the shipping through a melbourne importer, the kit to my door was about AUS $ 3360 weighs about 80kg.
I'm running 4 very large batteries at 48v to power my setup,
but I could have just put 2 in for weight purposes, my complete kit installed will add around 180 to 200 KG, even more if i add more batteries, if you wanna save weight, get a "minipump" or "europump" which runs all 4 rams off one pump and you can use 1 or 2 batteries, the weight will only add around 30 to 45KG depending. I got my gear from www.prohopper.com and my kit is the "Euro - chrome competition kit, US $1199".
The fit to my celica was a learning experience lets say that much, cuz of the IRS,, but i'm very confident now I've learnt how to do it, i'd like to install them on some more cars, keep in mind reinforcing is necessary if you wanna hop off the ground.
At high speeds the hydros are fine, some guys in the states do race on hydraulics , street races, but i wouldn't recommend it, anything over 140/160 KMH i just wouldn't feel safe.. imagine if you bumped a switch and got out of control,,, u would be dead..
The newer airbags I've seen have triple convoluted bags and give 8 to 10inches of travel which is pretty good, it just wasnt' fast enough for me and i hate the air sound it makes when it dumps.
$7000 for airbags should be fitted, else that's a rip off price.
The kit alone should only be around 3 or 4 grand for the bags, lines, switches, valves, air tanks etc.. And install the bags yourself then you'll know the system and wont have to take it somewhere to be fixed if it stuffs up.
By the way, i'm a member of Australia's largest national lowrider club, unity lowrider car club. We'll be meeting up in Sydney in 2 weeks time (same weekend as final autosalon) if anyone wants to check us out at parramatta park, just look for the bouncing cars with gold plaques in the back windows.
