improvedae86 wrote on Sat, 04 December 2004 22:09 | Adding weight to the front end , if only a small amount seems to get far greater turn in grip than stock weight level if the weight is correctly positioned lower and the suspension revised accordingly .
I have the problem that there is no under-steer , as fast as you can turn the wheel the car turns in . Its the rear which up have to worry about exiting corners applying hundreds of newton meters of torque . The result has be in my car ,turn-in even in the wet feels much more solid {like a german car} than the stocker daily driver ae86 . But i have added camber and caster , plus relocated arm locations for more camber scrub ,extra car width and wheel base , and less turns lock to lock , and more lock . So i cannot really comment on just dropping in the engine without all the other modification for safe traveling at speed .
Even travelling in friends ae86s with all the normal toyota modified suspension like trd etc there seems to understeer much greater than weight transfer to large amounts of oversteer . Might be fun be sure isnt fast , a neutral handling ae86 will always have a much higher cornering speed , as a lotus elise driver at Sandown found out going around the outside of him at turn 6-7 pushing 160-180ks mid corner .
See you next weekend Garth , then you might understand the level of modifications that these other sr20/ca18 ae86s will need to handle . And i still havent finished the next stage , multi link rear suspension .

so what your saying is that to run an sr20/ca18 powered car properly as you are doing/have done requires a lot of modification as to the cars original chassis design and suspension setup. i agree.
i agree that centering the added weight of an SR20 in the front at a lower centre of gravity would help the cars general 'skittery' feel at turn in. i too have found that with the 'tuned toyota' setup that the car tends to 'skate' at initial turn in with the light weight of the 4age. but that said, a sr20 just 'dropped in' with no suspension mods to accomodate the extra torque/weight will handle worse in the long run. i think you agree from what you said.
i also couldnt agree more about the neutral handling ae86 comment, oversteer setup is showy and fun but certainly not fast. i have found that the people who ride passenger in my car are astonished on how solid she feels, especially in the wet, on hard corners, even with the 2 way lsd in, the car doesnt seem to be 'on knifes edge' as most cars would be in that hard susp. setup. But, that said, i havent even come close to the amount of modification you have done to your ae86. so i can understand how much the chassis has to offer in that respect.
nice comment about the elise, that car has a serious lack of power though.
next weekend we will surely be having a chat about your car and dont worry, i fully understand the level of modification required to run an SR20/CA18 in an AE86 and that in itself is my whole point.
as for IRS setup, are you going to utilise the hot staff irs 'cage' bracket mount? or otherwise?
