I mentioned painting wheels in passing at Donnellans the other week, and the salesman's head nearly exploded! ! He couldn't tell me quick enough how many people had brought in wheels they'd painted, or gotten painted professionally, asking the tyre store if they could fix the flakes, bubbles, warps, chips etc in the paint job. The poor fellow was REALLY unsettled, like I'd just told him I had 200kg of C-4 strapped to my chest, and couldn't remember how long I'd set the timer for!
I took half a step back, and quickly said "oh, o.k. -how do people go with powdercoating?" -this didn't do much to calm him down, just slowed down his ranting a fraction.
He said there are a fair few people who get powdercoating to work out well, but the moral was that if it goes wrong, you can't go back to how they were - they'd have to be stripped/sanded, re-prepped, and try it all again.
I kinda agree now that I tink about it. Stick strictly to the factory finish, unless you get super-cheap 2nd hand wheels that you love, but got stuffed paintwork.
If you'd seen this salesdude recoil in horror when I said "paint" and "wheels" in the same sentence, you may not be so keen on the idea.
My 2cents anyway.
