Well... as an update 
Ringing around, only found two rear shifter W boxes, both W57's, one $500+gst and the other $750+GST (the 750 one I can get for $400 as a cash deal through a mate but with no warranty...)
So in the meantime while desperately hoping for a cheaper W box to come along, I started dismantling my 58... and what did I find...
Haven't gotten the rear casing off yet, but I'm thinking that might be where the problem lies
Now all I have to do is figure out how to get it off, and find a replacement...
