Silver paint 'codes' in wiring harness

OK, this may be dumb question time, but I couldn't find it after searching (either here or in Toyota tech docs) ...
What are the silver paint marks on the wiring? This is in an MX83 and JZX81 (and just about every other Toyota I've worked on, IIRC). There are either 1 or 2 dabs of silver repeated along the wires, which seems intended to differentiate them.
I figured were to essentially give them more wire colours. That is, they have run out of colours, so now they'll start again but with 1 silver dab, then over again with 2 dabs.
But that doesn't really seem to correlate with what I find in the harness. Do I just ignore them, or am I missing something here?
Edit: Some of them have red dabs instead ...
Cheers,
Adam.
