Find out what the max size is, I think it tells you what size your avatar has to be.
Open paint in windows:
(For XP):
Start->Programs->Accessories->Paint.
Once in paint, go File->Open-> (choose picture).
Once picture loaded, go Image->Attributes-> (Enter pixel size).
Now go File->Save as-> (Save the picture as a different file name to the original and make it a jpg type, (under file name, there is a drop box called 'save as type').
