what do i need to buy to actually do this?
if parts alone is going to be in excess of 500 bucks then i dunno if this is possible for me at all.

The gasket set is around $350. Bearings will set you back about $150. You're making a wild assumption that the crank is perfect - even if it is within tolerances you'll still have to linish it add another $50. You're over budget already and you haven't included hot tanking, honing, reringing (if wear/tolerances allow).
