I'd amend that to read "don't believe anything you read in magazines", especially if it's a local modified car mag!
Your story is a very common one - I know quite a few people who have had their car featured in a magazine, and the writer just makes up any old shit so it sounds good. 99% of readers wouldn't know the difference, so why not? Some people have even had their cars featured in magazines without their prior knowledge or consent, and the article is a complete fiction! It's unreal what goes on sometimes in the car mods industry.
