the top unit (looks like the vacuum canister attached to a mechanical dizzi) leaks - when you suck on the vacuum line, there's no restriction and you can clearly here air sucking in.

that part is sealed and my hit rate for repairing water taps (mechanical one in RA40) is three strikes so far.

fwiw, it might explains why the car's been running roung and using lots of fuel whenever the aircon was set to a temp above 20 degrees (valve opened up and lots of extra air gets fed into manifold).

at moment, the down side of this is that aircon-on = 20 degrees or lower inside the car, regardless of outside temps - when it rains, i can make ice on the windscreen Wink

but thanks all for the suggestions - i think i'll be xmas shopping at ABC wreckers when my holidays start
