suprnova were working on a new version ofthe bittorrent protocol to make the tracker server 'distributed' - in effect spreading the tracker function out to clients mostly eliminating the need for the tracker server (which was so easily shit down by the RIAA & MPAA).
i'd expect bittorrent will transform into something like limewire/kazza but with a much higher quotient of crap content due to:
RIAA/MPAA/et all seeding thousands of bogus files
shorter uptimes of clients so increased number of incomplete downloads
no moderation of torrents so likelihood of virus/trojan/bogus content will be high
for thos interested, there is this (somewhat technical) writeup about bittorrent performance from theregister:

cheers,
Charles.
