hi will! ... the link was half-link out when at full tension... maybez i do need the manual ? (shame i now have to catch 2 buses to get there) It might explain why it had lotsof power down low but ran out of puff before yours did.
i have ziplock thru link that sits on the timing mark - i'll score the link with a file before re-assembly.
idler pulley appears to be in good nick - chain is very flexible but no obvious stretch (not that you can easily tell when half the chain is still in the guts of the timing cover).
i never got around to look at the bell-housing - i left to head up to Maleny for NYE and got as far as Shane's place. engine ran fine under power, but at idle it was rough and at shanes place we clearly observed bubbles in coolant and steam at exhaust. temp got up to 3/4 mark after fuel stop at a servo (when i first noticed the rugh idle) near shane's place
BHG fix is well underway - the failure came from minor mods made to the water gallery in the head - on the exh side (on the block) has a fairly wide channel with a sort of bridge halfway along - the matching 'bridge' on the head had been machined away - end result being a weak point in the water-jacket seal about 5mm away from the fire ring... you can imagine the rest.
I'd say they machined the head out to ensure that both sides of the channel flowed (one side in the head is a dead end and fills up with junk)- downside was weakening the seal around the water jacket. idiots.
I'm stil a little unsure of how water vapour got to the oil - there's no obvious join between water and oil galleries - however the gasket left lots of silvery shit on both faces and lifted off very easily so i suspect it travelled thru the gasket and also via piston blowby at idle and decell (high vacuum, low fueling, retarded ign timing). it also could have got in during the few engine shutdowns i had that day.
now that i think about it, for the last few days it hd been starting rough - i had simply put that down to being cold and uncleaned injectors. until NYE, there was no sign of gunk on the oil filler cap.
i also doubt that head was re-tensioned after burn-in. The cam bolt was the tightest thing on the engine - followed closely by the banjo bolts on the fuel filter (which i suspect is as old as car). Sure there's 40psi of fuel beind them joins- but to do them up to same torque setting as a Mitsu head bold (approx 120 lb/ft) is fuken stupid.
When i got the head off, #6 had water sitting in the piston dish and the chamber/piston crown are clean from water being introduced into combustion process.
btw: previous owner must have some cooling issues - the lower section of a thermostat was wedged down inside the housing - the bit you rip off when you want a free-flowing thermostat - fuken lazy work. It also had functioning thermostat in place... v.weird.
plan is to get new gasket set (VRS), clean up the the head/block faces and re-assemble. There no visible damage to the head surface at #6
btw - now is reasonable opportunity to insert slightly larger injectors?
every injector plug has some damage (as has the temp sensor socket) and plug for #2 was held in place with blue gasket gunk.
