i was going to say something before, but other people have summed up my thoughts pretty well.

there IS an advantage running large diameter springs, as you can have the spring axis offset to the strut axis, which reduces the side load on the shock absorber shaft, making them last longer.

i suppose one "advantage" of coil overs is that when the spring goes "uncaptive", it wont fall off the perch, but if your springs aren't captive all the time, then you have designed your suspension wrong.
