the higher the octane rating of the fuel the less 'flammable' it is (more potential or stored energy). Better octane will reduce running on and reduce the carbon build up in your cylinders (the carbon promotes running on).

As said above, try less ignition advance, better fuel, and maybe a lower idle speed. Different heat range spark plugs can help, and maybe a combustion flush with decarbonising solution.
