My G/F's car is a 1.6L 1988 AE82 CS Sedan with 170K on the clock, it runs smooth and has always been reliable (it did break down once, but it was running funny and I was on the way to the mechanic to get it fixed anyway, so it didn't count)
Basically as everyone says, they are bullet proof, one of the most reliable corollas you can get. Take care of it by changing the oil and you'll never have a cheaper transport.
I wouldn't go past anything less that 1.6L. I've been in a 1.3L and they are too slow... 1.6L is a good compromise, has a bit of stick to get you out of trouble around town with good fuel economy. (Forget being able to burn past someone on the freeway, they don't create much more power up in high rpms, unless you have the necessary mods)
