ball joints are at the base of the strut/coil tube - commonly referred to as a macpherson strut. The other ball joints in the system are out at the ends of the steering rack and they would be referred to as 'tie-rod ends'.

Rack boots are flexible, bellows-like things go over the ends of the steering rack to prevent dirt-n-shit getting into the rack. They look similar to the boots used in some IRS suspensions and W drive shafts

these are the struts mentioned above - what part of the strut did they fail? the shock absorber insert. the psring, the spring seats, the upper bump stop, the top plate bearing

btw: when you bought the car from brisbane did it come with a safety certificate (used to be called RWC in Qld)?
