Wouldn't it be common that a combustion engine would leave carbon(black) deposits anyway? I mean if you have black smoke pouring out the back that's bad, oil rings or something. But most car exhausts are always a little black, and if they are shiny someone is polishing the chrome.....

thats perfectly normal for it too leave carbon deposits on the tail pipe most cars have that.  yeah theres alot of people who do that. If it something bad you'd think he would be going through a bit of oil hey? so thats what makes me think if he gives it a tune up he might get better mileage and hopefull get rid of the black smoke.
