scano wrote on Tue, 11 January 2005 23:09 | gday, just got my 4k runnig again, but its got a 3K head on it, only problem is im not positive if no1. was at top dead centre and now i think the timing is about 20 degrees out, she will idle but it keeps popping air/fuel out the troat of the carby when i rev it, ther is not much power and i know its the timing, is the only way to get TDC with the screwdriver so i can find 0 TDC on the harmonic, and what degrees will i need to set the engine on runnig optimax, 3K head, ported so 10.5comp, standard carb/cam/exhaust what should i set the timing to?

why nopt use a timing light?
if you have a stock cam, keep around 10deg advance.
if you have more overlap, you can use more advance.
did you adjust the valve clearances properly?
i would shine a torch down the spark plug hole and see where the pistons stops..
the crank pulley has a timing mark that will tell you where TDC is anyway, or do you mean the cam timing is out?
turn crank to TDC, soo if the 'on the rock' valves are at equalk heights..
