If you buy a half-cut, you should demand to hear the engine running before you pay for it. All they have to do is hook up a fuel pump, so it's not that hard. I started my front cut while it was sitting in my driveway, even had the air conditioning running! Smile

Apart from that you can do the normal things to check an engine's health - do a compression test, take the rocker cover off and have a peek at what's inside, check the inlet piping for excessive oil buildup, stuff like that.

As for your mum's Laser, I don't think it's fair to make a comparison between a thrashed shitbox and a high-performance engine like the 1JZ. Granted there are a fair number of crap 1JZ's coming into the country, but if you've got half an idea you should be able to pick up a good one.
