Its like the blonde secretary talking about her computer, "its not electric, its electronic." All cars (within reason), have 4 springs (bouncy bouncy), which hold the weight of the vehicle. All cars have 4 shock absorbers, something to control the bounce. Sometimes we have "struts" which is a housing that has both the shock absorber and the spring mounted in one. If you can't take the strut apart, you have to buy a new whole strut which has the new shock absorber housed in it, but its not that expencive (and you use the old springs and mounting bits). Sometimes the struts can come apart, and often with older cars the original shock assembly can come apart also. These are called oil bath shocks. These can be reconditioned according to the manual, but often these are replaced with sealed shock/strut cartridges. All shocks have oil in them. If rebuildable shocks (and oil bath type) are leaking, then you can just use a new seal. But if "sealed" shocks or cartridge inserts are leaking, they need replacement. Some shocks also have gas in them, but not all. Just buy the shocks/struts from Repco or someplace and save most of your money. Get your friend to fit them. [Report message to a moderator]
