I don't know much (i.e. I know nothing!) about the values any remaining hardtops in Japan. But I assume they would not be as "collectable" as say a Celica, so the price of even a GT would not be that great. Put it this way, if I could get a GT spec car for around $10k in Oz that was in good nic I think that amount would be worth it. I think someone in QLD - the guy who runs the Rising Sun Collectors club - imported a RT76 GSS for around $5k. I saw pics in "Restored Cars" magazine. It was neither a basket case or concourse but it seemed pretty good. It even had what I believe to be factory spotlights/driving lights behind the grille. I would have though that a rare type of early GT Toyota like that would have been worth more than thatin Japan, so maybe a decent RT114(?) GT Corona would not be too exy. Just a thought, if you are not already a member - the Rising Sun Register has or did have a periodical newsletter where there are classifieds. You could place a Wanted advert - you never no what leads you might get. I was after a 1600GT at one point (don't really have time/money/space for the momment) when I was a member but the one car I was referred to was not worth the trouble. Maybe one day if I am in the postion, I will just get one from Japan as that where the bulk of them are (South Africa got them too I am told - aywhere else?) and where people have the money to keep them looking and running properly. I mean you are unlikely to have a redneck in Japan who would put a Holden motor and V8 axle in a 1600GT like someone did in Australia, or do the rotary/tub thing to a TA22GT - those people should be shot. Last time I heard they were selling for around $25K in Japan. Another place thsat you could possible get one (if they were sold there that is, and not washed away by the tsumani ) is some of the countries to our north. Countries like Papua New Guinea for example got the early 70's Crown wagon that we missed out on - the one with the body coloured integrated bumpers. Who know what other unusual stuff they got.. Maybe there is an importer or two out there who specialises in the older JDM cars who would be able to advise you further. If it was me, I would only go through the hassle to get one of these if it was a GT, as they had the only engine that was not a truck motor, they had the full instrumentation, stronger driveline and rear track rods etc. You would not then have to track down all those parts later on. There was an 18RE injection that could go alright but that would not sound as nice as the 18RG. And I would get the facelifted model with the Rolls type concave grille - I hate that look.
