It doesn't matter if it is straight or not, as it is this bit here that you are trying to whack:

It is the inner part of the cage that holds the balls in place that you are trying to hit. It slips over the splined end of the shaft.

Putting it back on - refit the snap ring first, then yeah, just grease it a bit and push it back on. Theoretically you buy and fit a new snap ring first, but many people seem to get away with putting the old one back on.
