The adjustable spring pre-load acts upon the piston, more tension makes it harder to open i.e. more boost to open it is required.
It does not change the sound of it though, unless you wind up too much spring tension and it does not open at all Then you get the flutttering sound of compressor surge that so many dim-wits think is their BOV
