Well, my brilliance continues to amaze me. 
So I checked the wiring. As it turns out the ECT ECU has 2 plugs 26P and 16P, whilst the engine ECU has 4 plugs (8P, 22P, 26P and 16P). As it turned out, I hooked up the 26 and 16P ECT plugs to the engine ECU and vice versa. Interestingly the plugs have exactly same slots so they will just plug into the wrong place (ie not Dave proof). I suppose in a Crown they are separated by a foot of loom and a shitload of plastic.
After expunging all the petrol from petrol locked motor, shooting a bit of oil into the bores, swapping ECU plugs and waiting till all the petrol fumes had dissipated, the stupid thing fired first crank.
