Wed, 19 January 2005 15:35 I used to work in an exhaust shop, my dad still does, and I can tell you straight out that one of the most important things in an exhaust system, and also one of the most routinely forgotten is backpressure. Basically, it's all to do with the exit velocity of the spent exhaust gasses from the ports. You want to keep that filthy shit from getting back into your combustion chamber. The faster you can get those gasses to move without restriction, the better - hence extractors - the small pipe diameters keep the gas moving without the restriction. Too small a system and your car can't breathe - too wide, the gasses will slow down, and eventually creep back into the chamber, which means power loss, and usually a gay drumming noise. 2.25-2.5 sounds ok for a 4AGE. Also keep in mind, a 4AGE doesn't need much help sounding good - bar a rotor (and I personally think a well set up 4AGE, like Bill Sherwoods for example, sounds similar to a 13B) nothing sounds better on the roads. So basically, concentrate on performance, minimal restriction with enough gas speed to keep the gay out of your cylinders.
