If you just go to a decent place and ask some Q's, you'll be suprised how much it'll cost. Labour is the big killer, they'll always charge you shitloads for labour.. Which is why it's always best to do it yourself!
First thing you should do is go and buy a manual for it. Read through it, learn how it all comes apart and how it all goes back together. It isn't all that hard to replace a head in a K series.. So that can be an easy first step. Remove the head, get some work done to it, put it back together. Cam's and bottom end work get a bit more difficult, have to be careful with timing, locations, etc.
Or, as you said, you can just pay someone else to do it. Just be sure to ask around, get prices from different places, ask about recommendations in here, blah, blah, blah..
