You will probably find a lot of people who apply realise that and do not accept the offer in the first round. If you want to take the mech eng course just do it... preferably you should have done physics and a high level of maths, however, just do it and if you are having trouble in a certain subject unenrol from it before the HEC's cutoff date and do a primer subject to get you up to speed. Yes this will mean uni takes a semester longer but then in the big scheme of things its a lot better than doing 3 years of a 5 year course and then realising that you don't know what is going on!
