Yes thanks B1 for doping me in

Well after owning a e28 , you could say that if your are after a medium size early german car there are way cheaper to maintain than mercs . I have had lots of early European cars and there very reliable looked after well . The one atm has never let me down in three years .

Items to watch on those models are :
cam and rocker arm wear , even at low k's {walk away}
timing chain rattle with high k's {walk away}
fuel pumps noisy on it way out {L jetronic easy system}
ball joint ends in steering system worn
in later 1985> rear trailing arm passive toe bushes

Parts are relatively cheap with lots of general parts like brake pads , fuel system , service parts fitting lots of European cars like volvo etc as well . There was about five importers of these parts in Australia say three years ago .Here now there are maybe three left and there stocks are not as good , so for some items you have to go to the dealer which aren't that bad .
Ie : complete set of brakes / discs / pads etc should cost $350

Really looking at it you wouldn't bother with a early model unless it was really well maintained . The 1985> model has lots of changes and is a much better handling car . But as the market prices have crashed badly this year 1989> e34 are really cheap and will continue to drop . And the e34 was rated as the best medium size four door sedan for many years , handles like a small car , and even smaller sized engine models still leave most domestic falcons and commodores for dead on a country road .
