Just a counter argument to the above... why is the driver always blamed for the accident? Could easily be a stupid pedestrian who runs out in front of the car. They should place equal emphasis onto keeping people OFF the streets and not trying to blame people who drive on (and pay for!) the roads.

Well the obvious answer to this is it's not the drivers fault, but their car can still be made less dangerous to idiots.

However, life has some dangers in it. We'd be better of trying to reduce the amount of pollution that cars produce that we all suffer from, rather than just making the occasional accident less horrific. I'm all for ethanol as a petrol replacement.
