it really depends on tuning.
coincidentally i was researching into this this evening actually...
from what i gather to do so will require an afterarket ECU and some buggerising around with getting vacuum sense...? and a manifold, or an adaptor. there are 16-to quad manifolds available, theres a japlish site about that has the kit - if you want the full kit bar the rerouted water pump it comes in at 58K yen, converted thats 733 bucks. no shipping. you can buy the converter manifold on its own for less but still..
Or you simply take your cutting tool of choice to an 86/100KW manifold and lop off the bits to fit to the 16V manifold, reweld the 16V pattern to the 20v tubes, then mount to 16v as desired..
provided th tuning is right tho, - well have a look at the forum links at the bottom but the quote i saw on gains was that it sounds filth with *up to* 20% extra in peak power and a fattening of the mid range torque. doesnt mean an 86KW will automatically jump to that but that was that guys experience. thats a May 03 vintage thread btw and bills comment then as for "is it worth it?" .. "with a stock engine yes for power + sound no for cost..." for a modified engine he reckoned there was more value in it. hmmm bet the parts prices have dropped since then...
i did have a related que on this also for myself:... how different is the 20V ECU to the 16s? the wiring loom pins for wiring lights power etc will be different of course but i thought if the ecu is reading the afm/map sense, and controlling its injectors etc as standard... asides from the lack of VVT and the extra breathing of the 5th valve in the head , it should be possible to put on the Quad t/bs to a 100KW block (as suggested in original post) and use the 20v's original ecu to manage it?
every post ive dug up about bunging Quads on the 16v mentions using an aftermarket ECU and never using the stock ECU with non-engine functions patched in? i presume theres a good reason for that but as noone ever touched on the idea i dunno if im just thinking crazy or not hehe
(Digression: having an NA MR2 aw11 and thinking what would i like to do down th track? id prefer to keep it NA for insurance concerns. so either a 3sge upgrade or a gze upgrade or some NA toying... and as its currently an 86Kw red+blacktop theres been a lot of research! hehe.
from the sounds of it the best NA 4A combo short of going the 7age route is a 100Kw bottom end with smallport head and quads, with cams and ECU to suit.. id have to build mine with the 86 kw bits tho i did hear of using the bigport head on a 100KW block with big cams - that was an interesting route to take and extending that to quads would certainly be different too, id like to be a bit unusual im prolly talking out my arse in actuality ).
