Oops, my bad. Yes I did mean a Legacy/Liberty. I forgot also how rare they are in Oz compared to NZ, there are so many of them floating around over here that parts are real cheap. My 3T-GTEU/TRD water to air intercooler combo is using all the Subaru gear and was $800 NZ for the whole engine package.
Using the standard intercooler is the best trial option as very little cost involved and no changes to the pipework. No real loss if you were going to replace it anyway. Another option is S4/S5 RX7 intercooler boxed up, there are very few factory water/air setups but fabricating your own is cheaper than running new pipework for a front mount.
