there's no way to tell for sure, but it is possible.
the fact that it was cool leads me to believe that maybe it was a bad batch of fuel, combined with high altitude, cimbined wit hthe stress of driving up a mountain? 
and as an interesting side note, the factory standard lancers we have at work, with less than 20,000kms on them, ping their little titties off if you floor them on a hot day (regular unleaded fuel)
edit: and my local mobil service station has a sticker on the mobil 8000 extolling the virtues of the higher octane rating, as it reduces "pinking"
