Theres a few reasons for that. For instance, twice as many "resets" (homes) per cycle means less worst case cranking before firing. Helps to sell cars Wink

As 1 and 4 are fired from the same ignition channel it doesnt matter which reset it is. Naturally you could do the same with two teeth on the top wheel but by this way you have same effect wilst maintaining exact engine position (handy for when they went to sequential injection/discrete ignition later).
