It's a good place to live-not as exciting as the east coast-but very relaxed. Have you considered living in the southern/eastern suburbs in the foothills? Really nice-lots of trees. If you go to flinders uni for a look, there are always people looking for housemates there, and the rates will be a lot less than if you go and rent something straight off an agent.
