What Sean says is mostly correct.

Remember this - when running larger cams with larger overlaps you get reduced cylinder pressure especially noticeable at lower revs. You cannot make cylinder pressure while the intake valve is still open (no matter how you try) so the idea is to bump the C/R with the bigger cams to make the engine more efficient at high rpm.

General Rule -
Small cams = lower compression ratios
Big cams = high compression ratios

Edit - this is very subjective and you should give your engine specs to the cam grinder and go with his/her advice.
