with the configurable ECU's around now, they should be able to take a given input and use that to retard spark..
just look around some of the better ECU's sites and their list of features.. if in doubt, email the companies and ask.
unless you have a factory tuned knock sensor and interpretation circuitry, it will be difficult..
what you could look to is "ion sensing", which i know some ppl are currently designing, (and afaik, has been implemented successfully somewhere).. where you basically use the spark plugs as a sensor (after the spark of course) and the conduction thru the ions present post-combustion can indicate if timing needs to be advanced or retarded...

there is a thesis or a big article abotu it on the net somewhere..
