Petrochemical companies go to huge lengths fine-tuning the chemistry in their products, and spend millions of dollars in the process. They have the most money hence the best facilities, the best equipment and the best chemists/engineers/technicians on their staff. The idea that some third-party product made in someone's shed can be mixed in and somehow improve on this formula - without knowing what that formula is in the first place - is IMO ridiculous. But it's amazing what a good sales pitch can do, and never underestimate the power of the placebo affect.
Oh and I wouldn't dream of using any Teflon-based products (eg Tufoil) in an engine, although it's probably not a bad thing in a diff or gearbox. That's not to say it's necessarily a good thing either.
