I have searched the back of the guages before for the "4P" but it just doesn't exist on mine. The car is a CS Limited so it was originally carby 4A but has a tacho.
I went to Jaycar at lunchtime and they showed me a low voltage NO reed switch which was a tiny little glass tube with a very thin wire hanging out of each end. you could see the "reeds" inside and it all looked VERY delicate. I explaned what it was for and he said I could also use a Hall effects sensor. It sounds very much the same as a reed switch so I bought one and a packet of magnets. It's also miniscule, looks like it should be carefully soldered to a circuit board, the head of the sensor is only about the size of a match head. It has three legs/pins which I am told are power-signal-ground.
Have I got the right thing? should I get the delicate glass thing? Have I got it all phucked up?
