How about that, I had just tracked down the answer to that question and then I found this poor neglected post.
Answer:
18RG crank - Forged
18EC grank - Cast
So no, they are not the same.
Now I am just waiting for a reply on how to tell the difference.
This will have a fair bearing on my plans and coonfidence as I'm pretty sure I have an 18RC block (dip stick in wrong place for RGEU), but I'm not sure about the rods and the crank.
I had a little trouble making sense of what you were implying here.
Pistons gripping on Crank? I don't quite understand what you mean.
Have you got the correct main bearings in there for the crank ad block?
The are more than one type of main bearing,
1. Separate thrust
2. Integral thrust
My brother's 18RGU uses an integral thrust bearing set
The first set we ordered were separtate thrust.
Depending on teh age of the block/crank, they require different bearings.
Hopefully you don't have an old crank with a new block or vice versa. If you have miss matched them it may not work.
I am unaware of any differences between 18RC and 18RG conrods other than the tightening torques, but there may well be.
I saw on an old post that CelicaRA45 was at some stage selling factory STEEL conrods for an 18RG.
Whether this means that the 18RG ones are forged and the 18RC ones are cast I have no idea.
If someone is able to clear up this issue I am sure we'll all be glad.
