there's different ones available (some solid state, some use a relay), they're usually designed to switch up to 5-10 amps, so I'd probably advise another relay (especially with a solid state one - transistor voltage drop), and they'll normally activate off almost anything. Either the tacho wire or straight off one of the coils should be fine. If for some reason it wasn't, you could always 'join' a few of the coils together with diodes.
I didn't realise the 1JZ relay was different to most of the other toyota stuff, point noted!
