tell work to go to office works, buy a box of cheapest/lightest logitech optical mice with scroll wheel (Bluetooth would benice too), return to workplace, toss all the stupid one button mice in bin and use proper mice
we did... no drivers to download, no need to 'detect new hardware', just plug in and keep working.
back to the topic:
install the developer tools that come with the OS so you get an X11 client, then grab a free copy of OpenOffice <http://www.openoffice.org> or if you're brave, try NeoOfficeJ <http://www.planamesa.com/neojava>
make ripping radio-stations to disk easy with Streamripper
Mplayer and VLC are handy opensource alternatives to Quicktime player and windows media player.
Fire is a handy multi-protocol chat client (like Trillian)
TomatoeTorrent is a highly configurable (if somewhat cryptic) bittorrent client
If you're sharing your mac at home with PC's running windoze or linux or other, get Sharpoint to better define what to share, how and to who.
If your mac is exposed to the internet, get Brickhouse to get finer control over the built-in firewall
just about all of these are open source developments - simply google for the software title - the right URL will probably read something like softwaretitle.org or softwaretitle.sourceforge.net
another source is the ozmac archive <http://www.ausmac.net/> but unless you read macworld, you'll be flying blind.
