Do you have a silvertop or a blacktop?
On silvertops it can be pretty hard to find the timing marks, especially in my aw11 - even when I got it dyno tuned the guy couldn't find the marks, so he just tuned it from where it was, aftermarket ecu so it didn't matter that much anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy you took it to couldn't find the timing marks.
What octane fuel are you using? normal premium, 95 octane? or bp ultimate or optimax 98 octane?
remember in japan their normal fuel is something like 100 octane I think, and the 20v does have highish compression, so just use 98 octane all the time, although I don't think mine ever pinged on 95 octane (the knock sensor probably does its job then)
Are you sure its pinging? if so, I'd probably just try turning the distributor slightly, and see if it helps, if not try turning it a little more. (thats if you don't have a timing light, or really can't find the timing marks)
